LEIGH SALES: In that same New Yorker article, you wrote along those lines about needing to forge on. That when your husband Fred died your father told you that time doesn’t heal all wounds but it gives you the tools to endure them – “I found this to be true in the greatest and smallest of matters.”What are the tools? PATTI SMITH: Well I think the tools are experience. We are all going to have this moment. It’s part of the human package. It is part of the privilege of being human, is that we have our moment when we have to say goodbye. All of these people that we lose and this is what I mean by experience they are all within us.
